Guided Tuning Practice in Listening Welcome to this Listening practice page. It offers a simple way to begin. Nothing here is required. Nothing needs to be completed or accumulated. You are welcome to simply listen and notice what happens along the way. Listening Meditation (15 minutes) This meditation offers gentle guidance to support a receptive, non‑judgmental quality of attention. You do not need to adopt the imagery or concepts. Simply listen and notice what happens. You may want to sit comfortably during this. Closing your eyes can make it easier to listen more deeply. A quiet environment can help, but it is not required. Simply notice what is already present. Ambient sound. Breath. Sensation. Notice any impulse to fix, explain, or move away. Give yourself the experience of simply letting things arrive.

Questions for reflection
After Listening Congrats, you gave yourself fifteen minutes.  In these times, that's no small thing. In a world that constantly pulls attention outward, you chose to turn toward something quieter. Before doing anything else, pause for a moment and acknowledge that. You practiced. Not perfectly. Not performatively. Simply by showing up. That matters. Now, Stay With It A Little Longer The value of listening is not only in the meditation itself. It is in what you notice afterward. You do not need to answer these questions in a polished way. You do not need to write anything down unless you want to. Just let them land. What felt easier? Was there a moment where listening came naturally? Where your attention rested without strain? What felt harder? Did your mind want to move? Did impatience surface? Did silence feel exposed? Did sound feel overwhelming? Nothing is wrong. This is just the question that is alive right now. What surprised you? Was there a sound you had not noticed before? A reaction you did not expect? A shift in your body? Where did you focus in? On a particular sound? On your breathing? On internal commentary? Where did you fade out? When did attention drift? What pulled it? Noticing where you fade is part of listening. If you were to return to this meditation tomorrow, what would you be curious to explore more deeply? Silence? Texture? Your internal response? The space between sounds? One More Question How might a small shift in the way you listen change something in your life right now? Not in a dramatic way. Just slightly. In conversation. In decision making. In creative work. In conflict. In rest. Listening alters timing. And timing changes response. The First Movement Listening carefully is the first step in the Holy Trinity of Improv: Listen. Feel. Play. You have just practiced the first movement. If you would like to explore the next step in this practice, continue on to the next lesson. There is no rush. But if something in you is curious, follow it. Practice it with sound. Play it in your day. From here to there and back.
Next steps
If Something in You Wants to Continue Listening can open in different ways. For some, harmony becomes the doorway. For others, rhythm and pulse. If you feel curious, you are welcome to explore: Piano Listening through harmony, gravity, and choice → Explore the Piano Door Drum Listening through rhythm, timing, and staying with time as it moves → Explore the Drum Door No musical experience is required. A Gentle Orientation These offerings are not meant to be done quickly or all at once. Listening tends to deepen through return, not accumulation.
